70mph winds forecast as Storm Gertrude sweeps in

GUSTS of up to 70mph could hit the area on Friday as the latest named storm hits the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning and said Storm Gertrude could cause difficult travel conditions during the morning rush hour.

Its chief forecaster said: “There is uncertainty over the exact track of the depression and the depth of it, which in turn leads to uncertainty in the location and strength of the strongest winds.

“Winds are expected to widely gust 60 mph and possibly 70 to 80 mph in exposed locations and also locally inland as a squally cold front moves east during the morning, especially across western Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.”
