What's on in your local area

KNITTING FOR TOUR: Townsfolk are knitting bunting that will be flying proudly to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire when it arrives in Tickhill on April 30. Lesley Cox, who runs her Deli 28 delicatessen on Castlegate and is a leading member of the Tickhill Together group, came up with the idea of getting the town knitting and crocheting the small blue and yellow themed triangular flags and miniature cycling shirts. She said: “We are keeping it local by purchasing the knitting wool from town shop Rags to Stitches. Wool and patterns are available free of charge to knitters from the KSM/Card Gallery, Castlegate and from the Parish Room. After just three weeks we have already made over 200 flags and nearly 50 little shirts so when we are ready to hang them up at the Buttercross monument in the centre of the town a week or so before race day we will have a wonderful display. After the big day they will not be wasted as we are going to knit them together to form woollen blankets that will be donated to a suitable charity.”

KEEP OFF THE GRASS: Councillors in Tickhill have appealed to townsfolk and visitors to keep off the grassed area at the entrance to Alderson Drive off Sunderland Street. In the past couple of years parking of vehicles on the grass has become a regular occurrence particularly when cricket matches are being played on the Alderson Drive ground, when Tickhill Running Club is staging events and on occasions such as the evening of Tickhill and District Lions Club’s annual bonfire. As well as damaging the grass with tyre marks, Tickhill Town Council says that off-road parking on the DMBC-owned land is also spoiling the appearance of the town’s conservation area.

BACK TO THE FORTIES: Townsfolk will have an opportunity to get a feel for the 1940s when the Queen’s 90th birthday is celebrated on June 11. The wartime spirit is being recreated by volunteers of the town’s Tickhill Together group which is organising the event during the day and the staging of a special concert in the evening. Performing on the big night will be a newly-formed community choir that is holding practice sessions in St Mary’s Parish Church during May. LION EGGS: Tickhill and District Lions Club has been organising its annual Giant Easter Egg Draw. The big chocolate eggs weighing in at a minimum of one kilo each can be seen in shops, pubs and the library. Tickets £1 each.

BEAUTY PARLOUR: A new beauty salon and nail bar business is planned for the town. Miss L Jones has submitted a planning application to DMBC that seeks permission for change of use of the premises at 15 Market Place from a fashion shop to a beauty parlour. The application affects the character of a listed building or the character of the conservation area.

CHARITY RAFFLE: Staff at the town’s Spar supermarket and post office in Market Place have organised an Easter raffle, the profits from which will benefit their chosen charity the NSPCC. Tickets £1 per strip. A luxury Easter hamper, small hamper and a big Thornton’s Easter egg are among the prizes on offer. The store is closing on its target of raising £500 for the NSPCC since it began fundraising last August.
