WHAT'S ON: Bawtry

NEW SPORTS PAVILION: Town charity Bawtry Action for Recreation and Sport (BARS) is continuing to work to secure funding for a new sports complex to be built at the Memorial Sports Ground off South Parade. Stage one of the project will see the development of a sports pavilion. Tennis courts and a sports hall could follow this initial build. Chairman of BARS group of volunteers Matthew Brearley is leading the team that has already had plans drawn up and planning permission granted for the facilities.

SET BUILDERS: Bawtry Amateur Dramatic Society is on the look out for volunteers to help with building the sets for plays at its Phoenix Theatre. Bob Geeson is the leader of the team and has put out an appeal for people who enjoy DIY, being creative, painting and meeting new friends. Bob has invited folk who would like to try their hand at set building to call in at the Station Road theatre on Mondays 10am-1pm. Contact Bob 07929335347.

GARDEN CLUB: Members of Bawtry Garden Club attended the AGM at which the draft constitution was approved. A programme of talks and group outings has been organised for the coming year. An inaugural Garden Show will be held in September. Meetings take place 7pm on the first Tuesday of the month in the Methodist Church Hall on the corner of Doncaster Road and Station Road. REIGN MARKED: A plaque to mark the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is to be erected by Bawtry Town Council at The Pinfold next to Bawtry Methodist Church.

AIR CADETS: Members of Bawtry’s 2008 Air Training Cadet (ATC) Squadron collected their Duke of Edinburgh Awards at a ceremony at the South and West Yorkshire Wing headquarters in Castleford, West Yorkshire. www.2008aircadets.co.uk.

PATH FUNDING: Bawtry Town Council continues to consider what can be done to improve the surface of the public footpath that runs in front of the shops and businesses on the western side of Market Hill. As an emergency measure the council has already spent £400 on repairs to damaged and cracked sections of the walkway. The council is discussing the situation with the local authority regarding sources of future funding and the possible adoption of the path by DMBC.

INDIAN EXHIBITION: Students from Willow, Oakes, Pines, Beeches and Aspens classes at Wilsic Hall School have mounted an exhibition of their work in Bawtry Community Library during January. A spokesperson for the school said: “All of the classes have worked hard to create their own Native American Indian faces. Lots of different collage materials have been used to create the overall effect. Everyone is really proud of the end results and they have made a lovely display.”

HELP FOR ANIMALS: Bawtry Mayflower Animal Sanctuary has been presented with a donation of £35,000 by independent grant-giving animal charity Support Adoption For Pets. The money will be used to refurbish kennels at the Narrow Lane centre.

FRENCH LESSONS: A french language class has got underway at Bawtry Community Library. The sessions on Wednesdays 10-11.30am, which help fund the library, are aimed at beginners and improvers. Contact tutor Val Mounsey 01302 710814.

COUNCIL MEET: Bawtry Town Council meets in the New Hall, Station Road, on January 27. Members of the public are invited to take part in the 15-minute open session that starts 7pm when questions will be addressed to Mayor of Bawtry Cllr Alexander (Sandy) Young who will be in the chair. 

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: Misson and Springs Women’s Institute holds its first meeting of the New Year on January 27. Bawtry’s Margaret Byrne is guest speaker and will talk about her travels to India. Members can pay their annual subscriptions. The meeting starts 7.30pm in the Community Centre, Vicar Lane at Misson.

WALK ON: Townsfolk are invited to take part in the weekly walks on Tuesday afternoons. The Walking for Health events are for men and women who would like to improve their health, get some fresh air and meet friends. There are two groups. One walk is for a duration of 60-90 minutes while the other lasts 30-60 minutes. Both start from Bawtry Methodist Church on the corner of Doncaster Road and Station Road 1pm. Contact Sue 07909033577.
