Unique organ set for recital

AN HISTORIC church organ will be the centrepiece for a bank holiday recital in Rotherham.

Talbot Lane Methodist Church boasts an original Harrison and Harrison organ—the only one left in the country which has not been modified in its 96 years.

This time, the performer at the keys will be Surrey organist David Oldfield. Greensleeves and Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring will be among the pieces played.

Drummond Gillespie, president of the Sheffield and District Organist and Choirmasters Association, said the organ is arousing interest at a national level.

The sound and acoustics inside the Moorgate Street church are said to match the country’s most famous halls and cathedrals.

Las month saw the first recital for several years when former Sheffield lecturer Nigel Gotteri performed there.

Mr Oldfield’s recital will take place on Monday, May 31. A coffee morning will be held at 10am, with the performance starting at 11.30am.
