Top cop Fred Scholey back on the beat for marathon challenge

A FORMER senior police officer will be back on the streets this weekend for a very good cause.

Fred Scholey (pictured), who was a superintendent and district commander for Doncaster West police division, will be pounding the capital’s streets as he takes part in the London Marathon.

Fred (68), of Manor Farm Drive in Swinton, is being sponsored for Muscular Dystrophy UK in memory of his son Lee, who died of the disease aged 16 in 1989.

But he won’t be facing the daunting 26-mile challenge alone — daughter-in-law Fleur and son Damian, who are raising funds for thee National Autistic Society — will be alongside him.

Fred isn’t a stranger to long runs, although his last half marathon was 34 years ago!

“Our oldest son died of Muscular Dystrophy some years ago and for many years I have thought about doing the London Marathon,” he said.

“I have always kept fit. I once cycled to Paris from Yorkshire. I started training for the marathon 11 months ago.

“I am hoping to finish in four hours 50 minutes but it depends on the weather — if it’s hot then it could be harder.”
