AN EXHIBITION will mark the importance of British coal, from the 1800s to the pit closures.

Old King Coal will fill the Old Market Gallery, on Market Street, in the town centre, from October 7 to December 2.

The show will feature fine arts from Rotherham artists, including some with links to the mining industry.

Themes will include work at the coal face, pit ponies, child labour and confrontation.

It is being organised by former Rotherham College art head Derek Allport and gallery curator Vicky Hilton.

They are still seeking contributors to the show and would like to hear from artists, schools, community groups, pit bands, unions and private collectors.

Contact Vicky at vicky@omtc.org.uk or on 01709 829446 for more information.
