Opera offering coming to theatre

A CLASSIC story will be hitting a high note with music lovers when one of the great operas comes to Doncaster’s Cast Theatre.

A new English version of Guiseppe Verdi’s La traviata will be staged on Wednesday, March 8, and Thursday, March 9.

The production is presented by Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose and tells the story of Violetta, a so-called fallen woman, who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future.

This critically acclaimed new production moves Verdi’s opera to Atlanta, USA in the 1920s era of prohibition and bootlegging, gang bosses and crooked politicians to reveal the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering parties.

It features new orchestrations for piano, clarinet and cello by Harry Blake and includes the famous drinking song Libiamo ne’ lieti calici and Violetta’s aria Sempre Libre.

Mathew Russell, Cast’s interim executive director, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the world’s most beautiful music to Cast, continuing our commitment to supporting local people to access affordable and enjoyable world class culture on their doorstep.

“We’re particularly excited to present the first fully staged opera at Cast, La traviata. Whether you’re an opera enthusiast or completely new to it, you’ll enjoy a glittering night out.”

Ticket cost £20 or £18 concessions and available from Cast’s box office by calling 01302 303959 or visiting castindoncaster.com.
