Keep your treasures safe

A FREE event is being held for history buffs to see how historic treasures are being kept safe and pick up a few tips for their own conservation efforts.

The ‘Meet the Conservator’ event will take place at Clifton Park Museum on Saturday, July 3.

It will allow the public to see how the staff look after the collections, with the opportunity to get some advise on preservation.

The event is the first of its kind to be held at the museum and will be hosted by Rotherham Borough Council’s Conservator Anna Barnes, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

Anna said: “I am excited to see what kind of questions I will be asked.

“On the day, I will be able to provide advice on the long-term preservation needs of the visitors' items.

“I can also provide ideas and solutions to prevent their treasured antiques and heirlooms deteriorating.

“Without conservation advice, the objects held in trust by the museum will deteriorate quicker, meaning that fewer generations of people will get to see them.

“My aim is to preserve things for the longest amount of time possible and ensure that their historic integrity is not compromised through practical conservation/restoration treatments.

"If people can't bring the items that they want advice about to the event, then a photo is the next best thing.

“I can also give advice on caring for newer items—after all, prevention is better than cure."

Pre-booking, by either calling the museum on 01709 336633 or by visiting in person, is essential as places will be limited.
