Jack ‘On the Road’ to New York

AMERICAN idol Jack Kerouac will be celebrated when a major international convention descends on Rotherham’s New York Stadium.

The Rotherham United ground will host the annual International Jack Kerouac Convention on July 6 and 7.

The literary event, organised by Brian Clarke and Tom Eliot and billed as “like an episode of Madmen has come to life”, will see literature and music fans from across the world heading to Rotherham.

Clarke and Eliot, who wrote the play Beat Surrender featuring a weekend in the life of beat poet Kerouac (pictured), said bookings were already coming in from Holland and the USA.

Brian said: “We are expecting fans of Jack’s writing but also people who like jazz and folk, performance art, cinema and theatre.

“This is by any standards an important literary occasion and we are delighted to be bringing it to Rotherham.”

The event takes place over two days and includes poetry, theatre, dance, music and performers in a weekend of pure unadulterated beatnik culture.
