CD REVIEW: Lukas Graham by Lukas Graham

I WAS pleasantly surprised by the self-titled Lukas Graham album.

It’s not so much musical depth which impresses, but the subjects singer Lukas Graham Forchhammer tackles in his lyrics

Where the leaders of the boy band pack — and despite being a solo artist, his backing band are included in all the promo photos and clearly essential to his output — prefer to stay on the safe ground of love, heartbreak and generally having fun,  Forchhammer’s work is much grittier at times.

His lyrics openly explore his feelings of loss at the death of his father, while one track is a message of support to a friend serving time in jail.

He deals with fame, aspiration and life in the music business.

It’s certainly adult stuff given the poppy nature of much of the music.

You may be familiar with his single 7 Years, which itself considers Graham’s expectations for each stage of his life and the importance he places on family and friendship.

But for all the backwards cap-posturing and inoffensive melodies (give or take the odd annoying Annie homage) there’s evidently a thoughtful side to singer Forchhammer, which suggests he could be one to watch.
