Beatboxing, script writing and poetry festival for under 25s coming to Rotherham

A FESTIVAL for young writers which features all things lyrical and literary including spoken word poetry, beatboxing and script writing is coming to Rotherham.

The Hive Young Writers’ Festival for 14 to 25-year-olds will take over myplace in St Ann’s Road, Clifton, next Saturday, April 14.

The festival is a jam-packed day of word-based happenings for young writers from across Yorkshire and the north and is a chance for people to network, hear from professional writers, meet like-minded people, perform and write.

The festival first visited Rotherham four years ago and is now making a return.

A spokeswoman for the festival said: “Workshops and talks will span everything from novel and performance poetry, to advice from publishers and about writing careers. 

“There will also be the chance to ask questions to a wide range of professional writers in panel Q&As.

“In addition we have book stalls from Valley Press, The Poetry Business and Longbarrow Press.

“You might also encounter roving Hive reporters and Write Radio from Sheffield Live hoping to record some words on the fly.

“Or take to the microphone with your own words - be they sung, acted or spoken and there’ll be a poetry finale slam competition with prizes.

“There will also be a number of free one-to-one advice sessions you can book with professional writers on the day.”

Workshops include making your own zine and a beats, rhyme and life jam session with world-renowned recording beatboxer and lyricist, Testament.

He will also be joined by the multi-talented musician Dan Loops - known for his beatboxing, looping and MC’ing skills - who will give festival-goers the chance to create a work of art that they can even perform in the open mic session.

The event runs from 10am to 6.30pm and tickets cost £7.40.
