Donors dined at The Sweet Escape, on High Street, with proceeds going to Rotherham food banks.

The money will be used to buy personal hygiene products for those facing a choice between buying food and toiletries.

The evening was organised by Diann Fitzgibbons, of Labour supporters group Coffee, Cake and Socialism.

“I was inspired to do something after watching I, Daniel Blake,” said Diann. “I am so grateful to everyone who has come along in support.

“None of us are very rich these days but at least we can afford to bathe — to not even be able to afford deodorant must be a low ebb.”

Guitarist Bob Humphries provided music, while cafe owners Paula Kacprzyk and Tomasz Ugniewski served up soups, salads and homemade desserts — including a vegan Guinness cake.

Paula said: “It was a pleasure to host the evening. It’s great that we can help people in need.

“We would very much like to do more of it in the future.”
