Whiston medical centre to double capacity with new floor & frosted windows for privacy!

PLANS to double capacity at a doctors’ surgery by adding another floor were passed — after being tweaked to include frosted windows upstairs.

There had been concerns about loss of privacy for neighbours from building upwards at Whiston Medical Centre, on Hunger Hill Lane.

But the proposals were amended to show obscure glazing on the northern side, overlooking the gardens of Cottam Close and Hunger Hill Road.

A report to RMBC’s planning department said: “These windows will serve consulting rooms and do not require to have open outlooks as would be expected in a habitable room window in a residential property.”

Other changes made from the original plans are no loss of public amenity or the silver birch tree currently standing within the GPs’ grounds.

The upward expansion will take the surgery from five to ten consulting rooms.

The plans said the second floor would help the site meet patients’ needs.

They also include a meeting and training room and a lift for patients to access the first floor consulting rooms.

“The principle of the extension is considered to be acceptable,” a Rotherham Council spokesperson said.

“The revisions made by the applicant have overcome the initial concerns raised from loss of green space, impact on trees and increase in overlooking to nearby residential properties.”

The loss of view raised by some of the five objectors was noted but “cannot be afforded any significant material planning weight”.
