Community stalwart Betty honoured

A MULTI-TASKING village stalwart who has given 35 years of service to her community has been rewarded with trophy recognising her dedication and hard work.

Betty Staley moved to Micklebring in 1981 and wasted no time getting stuck into the life of her village and neighbouring Braithwell.

Over the years, she has run the Darby and Joan Club, joined Braithwell’s Women’s Institute and the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association branches, helped out as a sidesperson at the village church, organised monthly lunches at the Ruddle Centre in Braithwell and put on regular coffee mornings for the Evergreen Club.

She even found time to join Braithwell Bowls Club and served as committee member and treasurer.

Her late husband Alan was also happy to do his bit, joining in the restoration of the Master’s House after it was severely damaged by flooding.

Now Betty’s long and considerate service has landed her the J.J. Fox Award - awarded for the 19th time to a worthy villager - from Braithwell with Micklebring Parish Council.

The trophy is named after the first head teacher of Braithwell’s village school, and his grandson John Fox performed the presentation to Betty at the Ruddle Centre.
