Murder suspect "went fishing after attack"

A JURY has heard how one of the suspects in the death of pensioner Mushin Ahmed went fishing hours after the fatal attack.

Damien Hunt (30) of Doncaster Road, East Dene, is charged with murdering Mr Ahmed alongside Dale Jones (30) of East Bawtry Road, Whiston.

Witness Kieran Rice described to jurors at Sheffield Crown Court on yesterday how he Hunt went fishing at around 6am last August 10 — three hours after the attack on Mr Ahmed.

While there, Mr Rice says Hunt's then-partner Kim Olwen sent him texts meant for Hunt, adding that he did not read them but just handed over the phone.

Mr Andrew O’Byrne, defending Jones, read the texts out in court.

He said: “One says: ‘Tell [Damien] there’s nowt here. There’s no coppers. We've been stood on the front for ages. Come home and stop being paranoid.’”

He asked Mr Rice: “You agree that seems to be a text about the police?”

Mr Rice answered: “Yes.”

Mr O’Byrne quizzed Ms Olwen about the texts on yesterday afternoon.

She replied: “I can't really remember that. To be honest all that night was such a blur and it was a long time ago.”

Both Hunt and Jones deny murder. The trial continues.
