Child sex abuse trial: Alleged abuser Sajid Bostan was former police cadet

ALLEGED sex abuser Sajid Bostan has told how he wanted to become a police officer and also worked for the prison service.

Ex-bouncer Bostan, of Sherwood Crescent, off Wellgate, gave evidence today at Sheffield Crown Court, where he is charged with seven offences — all against one girl between 1990 and 2001 — including four counts of rape.

The 38-year-old, who said he was once a police cadet, has previously admitted having an affair with the woman when she was in her twenties.

The woman (36) claims she first met Bostan’s co-accused Arshid Hussain when she was around 12-years-old and living in care.

She claims she was forced by Hussain to give oral sex to Bostan when she was under 16, sometimes at Clifton Park, and Bostan told her to perform oral sex on his brother, Majid Bostan, who is charged with this offence only.

The woman said at the time she was under the influence of heroin and did as she was told.

The alleged victim also claims when she was 20 she was raped by Sajid Bostan and Hussain at the Prince of Wales pub.

She said she had become pregnant — she believes it was as a result of this attack — and had given birth to the child.

Giving evidence today, Sajid Bostan said he had met the woman in early 2000 when he was a bouncer at The Zone nightclub, and began an affair with her which lasted around six to eight months.

He said when he had met the woman, her child was around two to three-months-old and she had told him the baby's father was another Asian man.

The defendant said he had never associated with Hussain or any of his brothers, but “knew of them”.

Bostan told the jury he had wanted to join the police force and became a police cadet when he left school.

He said that when he was 16 he became engaged ahead of an arranged marriage at age 18.

Mr David McGonigall, defending, said Bostan had been charged with two counts of affray in 1996, so voluntarily stepped down from the cadets.

He was given an absolute discharge for the offences.

Bostan had stints working as a taxi driver and at Doncaster prison, Mr McGonigall said.

Bostan said that during the affair he had met some of the woman’s family, and she had been “happy, funny, had a good sense of humour”.

He added: “She grew very attached to me and was very possessive over me.

“A few times I ended the relationship and she would say: ‘You can’t, I’m pregnant to you’, then weeks later she would say it was a false alarm.”

Bostan added that he had moved to working at Kingdom nightclub in Sheffield because when he had ended their affair the girl would turn up at The Zone, so he had asked his boss to move him.

“She was constantly phoning me, harassing me, (saying): ‘We need to sort this out,’” he said.

Bostan said that when he was interviewed by police about her allegations he was asked if he would give a DNA sample and co-operated fully.

Prosecutor Ms Michelle Colborne, cross-examining Bostan, said in early 2000 when their affair started the woman was using heroin, had been through a childhood of sexual abuse and had been in and out of care homes.

Bostan said he did not know then she was taking drugs, that she had never mentioned any childhood abuse and when they had met she was “laughing, being cheeky” and was “confident”.

Ms Colborne said Bostan had dressed their relationship up as something “genuine and normal” rather than an abuser who had returned to continue abusing.

Bostan denied this and insisted they had first met in the nightclub.

Ms Colborne said Arshid Hussain would take the woman, then under 16, to Clifton Park and she would be forced to give oral sex to Bostan, who was aged around 17, as well as his younger brother and their mates.

She said: “These evenings, these would be your lads with your strict home lives, getting your chance to be a little wild, getting a taste of sex without your parents knowing.

“Immediately after, getting her into your dad’s van and taking her back to the children’s home.”

Bostan replied: “If she's been abused, she's not been abused by me and my brother.”

Majid Bostan denies one count of indecent assault.

Sajid Bostan denies four counts of rape, one of indecent assault and two of aiding and abetting rape.

They are among five men and two women who denied a total of 62 charges.

The trial continues.
