Pupils enjoy a ‘wizard’ night at Dearne school

A MAGICAL evening was had by all at a Dearne Valley school thanks to a wizard idea to bring literature to life.

Students and staff at The Dearne ALC in Goldthorpe, celebrated Harry Potter Book Night, A Night of Spells, a global event organised by book publisher Bloomsbury.

The school library had a Hogwarts-style makeover for the event with decorations created by students which included floating candles, golden snitches, potions and spells.

Librarian Pauline McDougall welcomed wizards, witches and muggles to the evening’s events which included the Sorting Hat Ceremony delivered by Year 11 students, a potion lesson from science teacher Miss Conway, literacy activities, crafts and a potion ingredient hunt.

For completing an activity, students were treated to a visit to The Three Broomsticks for a Butter Beer and a choice of goodies from Honeydukes including chocolate cockroaches, sugar mice, jelly beans and other delights.

The evening ended with a Harry Potter Ultimate Spellathon Challenge where students and staff worked in their houses to be crowned quiz champions, with Ravenclaw crowned the winners.

Ms McDougall said: “It went extremely well and we were very pleased to see so many students attend with such enthusiasm.

“I must congratulate the Year 11 students who supported the event whose passion and Harry Potter knowledge added to the night’s success.”
