Child sex abuse trial: Alleged victim's mum: "Basharat Hussain tore my family apart"

THE MUM of an alleged grooming victim has told a judge how abuse suspect Basharat Hussain tore her family apart, making her feel like “a failure”.

THE MUM of an alleged grooming victim has told a judge how abuse  suspect Basharat Hussain tore her family apart, making her feel like “a failure”.

In a statement read out at Sheffield Crown Court today, the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said: “I feel like a failure who could have protected [my daughter]”.

She described how Hussain, who faces charges of assault, indecent assault and threats to kill her daughter, turned the teenager from a “happy little soul” of 14 into “the person he wanted her to be”.

The complainant’s mum said: “At 14 [my daughter] was sensitive and didn’t like to upset anyone.

“She was sporty, loved dancing and loved to curl up with me and watch films.

“She was clever and good at every subject. She was enthusiastic, wanted to learn and was a popular girl at school.

“She was never naughty or cheeky and never told lies. We were a close family and enjoyed each other's company.”

When the girl met Hussain at age 14, her mum says, she changed drastically and spent much less time at home.

Hussain would frequently turn up in his car and summon the girl to it before driving her away, she said.

“She became very nasty and didn’t want to talk to me,” the mum said.

“She became very withdrawn and would sit in her bedroom, waiting for calls from Bash.

“Kids would sometimes bang on my door and say: ‘Bash took her.’ I would call the police. But I was the bad one in her eyes.

“I called her Bash’s creation. There was the person I knew and the person he tried to make her be.

“He used to say: ‘I don't know what’s wrong with you. All my other girlfriends’ mums love me.”

The statement described one occasion when the complainant’s mum came home to find Hussain in her home, leaning against her daughter’s bed.

“I went mad and told him to leave,” she said. “As he left he said: ‘I’ve already had your daughter in your bed anyway.’ That devastated me.”

Hussain denies 15 child sex abuse charges. The trial continues.
