Owners take the lead in chipping scheme

The number was a record for the drop-in events being held by Rotherham Borough Council and the Dogs Trust to keep pet owners on the right side of the new law.

Wardens at the library on Station Street microchipped the 180 dogs in just four hours.

Some 110 dogs were chipped at Dinnington in March and 118 at Clifton Park in January.

Karen Hanson, the council’s assistant director of community safety and streetscene, said: “Dog owners should be aware that the law changed on April 6, so all dogs are now legally required to have a microchip.

“It usually costs from £20 to £30 to get your pet chipped at the vets, so by coming along to one of these sessions you can save money as well as making sure your pet is safe and legal.”
