Fly-tippers warned: “We will prosecute.”

DUMP your waste illegally and we will catch you — that was the message from council bosses as it looks to clamp down on the plague of rubbish which continues to blight the borough.

As these pictures and others in the Advertiser over recent weeks show, the problem has become more widespread, with everything from sofas to fridges being dumped.

Our photographers spotted commercial waste dumped on Chesterhill Avenue, Thrybergh (below left), last Monday, which spilled into the road.

Meanwhile, if anyone fancied an overnight stay on the cheap, they could check into a caravan abandoned on Common Road, just outside Harthill on the same day.

Rotherham Borough Council said it would take legal action against anyone found fly-tipping.

Karen Hanson, the council’s assistant director of community safety and Streetscene, said: “The council has a zero tolerance approach to fly-tipping and where we find evidence to support it, we will take action against those responsible.

“During the last year, we have prosecuted 17 people, with more than £14,000 of fines and costs handed out.”

Summer opening hours are now in force at the council’s four waste recycling centres, with the North Anston, Greasbrough, Rawmarsh and Bramley sites all open from 10am until 6.30pm, six days a week.

People living in the borough can use the sites to recycle household waste free of charge.

The times will remain in place until October 30, when British Summer Time ends.

Each centre closes one day per week as follows: North Anston on Tuesday, Greasbrough on Wednesday, Rawmarsh on Thursday and Bramley on Friday.
