Driving visitors and shoppers into the town centre

COUNCIL bosses hope the launch of new buses on routes into Rotherham will bring more visitors and shoppers to the town centre.

More than 30 buses are now operating on routes from Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield into the town centre as part of a £7m investment.

Stagecoach has introduced 10 Alexander Denies Enviro200 MMC buses which will operate on the 22X route between Barnsley, Wombwell, Wath, Manvers, Parkgate and Rotherham.

Meanwhile, First South Yorkshire has launched 22 new vehicles as part of a £5 million scheme.

The new buses feature leather seats and are also fitted with SUB charging points for passengers use.

They will run on the X78 route between Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. The route also serves Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Rotherham Borough Council’s advisory cabinet member for jobs and the local economy Cllr Denise Lelliot said that, tied in with Rotherham winning the best town centre high street in the Great British High Street awards last year, the new buses should see more people visiting the town.

She said: “There's never been a better time to visit Rotherham, particularly given our recent success in the Great British High Street awards.

“The introduction of these fleet of vehicles by First South Yorkshire and Stagecoach Yorkshire means passengers can travel here in luxurious comfort, as well as knowing that they are doing more than their bit for the environment.

“So it really is worth hopping on your local bus and coming to Rotherham to find out why we officially have Britain's best town centre High Street.”
