Happy ending for Wentworth

DESPAIR has turned to elation for a cricket team after a close-season promotion ruling.

Wentworth thought they had missed out on promotion in the South Yorkshire Senior League after a rival team, Wombwell Main B, fielded two ineligible players in a key fixture.

It meant that Wombwell's opponents that day, Whiston Forge, were awarded the points and went up instead.

It now transpires that Wentworth will make the move up to Divsion Three East after all due to a restructure of the league.

Wentworth secretary Gareth Hobson explained: “It has meant that no club with two teams can play at the same level, such as first and second teams both playing in Division Three East and West. There have also been a few changes to the regionalisation of some clubs moving from East to West and vice versa, and also the merger of Rotherham Pheonix and Sheffield United.

“This has given Wentworth the opportunity to be promoted after all, which is great news to us.”
