Armed response police called to Swinton incident

RESIDENTS were told to stay in their homes as police arrested a man in connection with the alleged assault in which a woman sustained “serious injuries”.

An armed response unit and police dogs attended the incident on Portland Street, Swinton, on Friday (6) night.

One resident said: “There was a large police presence. I heard an officer shout that he was part of the armed response unit and I was told to stay inside.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers had arrested and charged a 39-year-old man following “an alleged assault of a woman”.

Craig Ernest Epton, of Portland Street, appeared before Rotherham Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with assault.

He was bailed to appear before Sheffield Crown Court at a later date.

The spokeswoman added: “Police were called at around 9pm on Friday after a 37-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted in the Portland Street area of Swinton.

“She suffered serious injuries and required medical treatment.”
