Letter: Proud of Breast Screening Unit team

I RECEIVED a letter from Rotherham Breast Screening Clinic asking if I would like to take part in a trial for women up to the age 73 (my age) and to attend for a mammogram on September 9 which I did. I received a letter to say I had to go back for another

I had an appointment to see consultant Inder Kumar who informed me that I had a small enema (cancer cells) in my right breast and needed an operation to get them out. He told me the battle plan and breast nurse Ann Parkin talked me through the plan to make sure I understood. I had a pre-med on October 10 to check if I was A1 to go into action. I went to the physics department for a sentinel node image. I had a small amount of radioactive material injected into my right breast which is carried into the armpit and trapped in so they can see the enemy on the scan.

I went into hospital on October 15 at 7.15am, I met consultant Mohammed Algailani who told me how they would tackle the enema. I had a wire inserted in my breast to guide them into the battle ground. I had another check up to see if I was still A1 and then taken to theatre and met the A team (anaesthetist), Captain Marat Singatullin and his troops. I woke up at 11am and felt so good I thought I hadn’t been in the battle.

I was thirsty but no pain. I was taken to day surgery and given tea and toast. I got dressed and I had two small wounds and a blue boob where blue dye had been inserted while I was unconscious to help find the enema. I could go home at 2pm.

I cannot thank everyone involved in my battle enough, they made it so easy for me. I was told to do some arm exercises to stop it going stiff. Three weeks later on November 4 I went to see Nour Alshurbasi who told me everything looked good, but to make sure I need to go to Weston Park Hospital to see the Sharp Shoots, who would give me shots of radiotherapy to make sure none of the enema had escaped. I am waiting for the appointment which should be in three weeks.

So ladies, please phone for an appointment on 01709 424807 after your 73rd birthday, it may save your life. The treatment and the staff are so good. I thank all the team connected to the Breast Screening Unit for being so brilliant.

Your Commander General  should be proud of you, I am.
