Transport must be affordable

Re proposals for control of buses: It sounds like the fat cats at SYPTE want to take over from the fat cats at First.

A public transport system needs to be affordable by all; people on the lowest incomes currently exist on about £50 per week.

40p adult single fares or £5 for weekly pass would allow everyone to use the buses. Even better the £5 weekly passes could be a 7 day pass, scanned by driver, to allow use of 1 day at a time so that people could economise by spreading the use of their pass over a longer period.

The buses mostly are for people who can't afford cars; the buses are not provided for the benefit of wealthy shareholders who probably drive around in BMWs.

While  councillors and MPs can claim back all their travel expenses public transport should not be extortionate to oppress the poor.

With the current billion pound grant from the government it should even be possible for bus companies to offer more free services like the FreeBee on the Rotherham to Parkgate route.

It can't cost that much to run an old bus around town. Free public transport systems exist around the world and they work very well, and they are good for the environment.
