Marathon man Ray just keeps on running

COMMITTED runner Ray Matthews is in the middle of the biggest endurance challenge of his life as he attempts to complete 75 marathons in 75 days.

But it isn’t the gruelling amount of exercise which is keeping him awake at night — it’s the £75,000 target he hopes to raise for a specialist playground at Newman School.

Ray, (75), of Maltby, began his challenge by running alongside pupils from the school at Herringthorpe Playing Fields on Saturday, July 2. He is due to complete the challenge on September 14.

He said: “I am feeling really good — much better than I thought I would. But, at the same time, I suspected that the first 15 marathons would be the worst and that everything after that would level off.

“But that’s not happened — they’re not getting any easier. I have never done anything like this before and I’ve never done anything without rest days, which I think is why it’s so difficult.

“I am confident that I will complete this challenge though. What worries me is that £75,000 — that to me is the true challenge.”
