LETTER: Anyone know of bed of air boiler?

AS a volunteer medi-car driver for the South Yorkshire Ambulance service, over the ten years I heard many tales from ex-steelworkers and miners, but the one that sticks in my mind was from a gentleman who was an engineer at the NCB’s facility at Fence near Sheffield.

He told me that the NCB had developed a coal-fired boiler that burnt on a bed of air and there was little or no pollution at all. It was abandoned when the pits closed and so did the fence works. I have always wondered if anyone knows anything about it as it would be good for the climate, and our coal industry,
