Green for ‘Go’ for eco-pupils

GREEN-thinking youngsters have teamed up with a “cheeky money” to help get their message across.

IT pupils from St Bede’s Catholic Primary won a £500 prize in a Rotherham Borough Council recycling awareness campaign with their animated film starring a wasteful animal.

Also celebrating were Milton Special School kids, who picked up a prize of the same amount for producing a new version of One Direction hit What Makes You Beautiful, renaming the song That’s Why We Recycle.

Members of St Bede’s after-school IT club based their own awareness animated film around the antics of a wasteful character called Cheeky Monkey who eventually sees the error of his ways.

Teaching assistant and IT co-ordinator Gavin Sharp said: “I’ve been amazed by the maturity and pro-active nature at which the children have tackled this issue.

“They’ve also had a lot of fun making the film and providing the voices and sound effects.

“I believe their final film really hits home the importance of all us disposing of our waste electrical items correctly.

“The children intend to spend their winning on more IT equipment to improve their skills so they can further improve their capabilities — but they haven’t ruled out buying an XBox.”

The Milton School song highlighted the importance of disposing of electrical equipment correctly.

The school has decided to spend their prize on new sets of headphones for the pupils.

Brad Johnson, carbon reduction officer for the council, said the borough’s youngsters had come up with some brilliant ideas in the competition.

He added: “Children are becoming increasingly surrounded by electrical items at home and even in school.

“That is why it is so important that we help them understand what is contained within electrical equipment and the significant environmental impact they have if not disposed of in a proper manner.

“Reusing and recycling electrical waste helps prevent contamination of soil and ground water and ensures materials are used effectively.”
