Footballers' high hopes for Stateside trip

FOOTBALLING students will this week set off on a nine day trip in the hope of returning home with the offer of a scholarship from leading State-side universities.

Twenty-one students from Thomas Rotherham College between the ages of 16 and 18 hope to impress American coaches and earn themselves the opportunity to play football and study abroad.

TRC coaches Nick Sansom and David Woodcock will be leading the students in the States as they spend four nights in a Hilton Hotel and four nights with host families, between July 5 and July 14.

While in Long Island, the students will compete in four matches, with the first being held at the new Pier 5 soccer field facility.

Coach David Woodcock said: "The lads have been training hard in preparation for the fixtures out there as we expect tough games.

"The American teams are always very fit and athletic and technically gifted."

Shopping trips in Manhattan, University tours and museum visits are just some of the activities organised aside from the football in what will be the fourth visit TRC students have made to the USA.

After the last visit in 2014, goalkeeper Josh Jones from Swinton gained a scholarship at Western Texas College where he will major in sport education.
