Chance to change politics

Dear Sirs,

If nothing else, the Prime Ministerial TV debates have succeeded in increasing interest in the General Election, something that is welcome given that only 55% of voter made it to the polls in 2005.

As a Liberal Democrat, I am of course very happy that my party has finally received close to the same media attention that the Labour and Conservative Parties have been guaranteed in the past. Many voters are switching to the Liberal Democrats after learning more about our policies and realising that we are a viable alternative to the two old parties.

Since the first debate, I have heard from many people who say they do not usually vote, but will vote this time. I have also received messages of support and offers of help from people with no previous affiliation with the Liberal Democrats.

For the first time in my life (I am 34 years old), this General Election promises to give the British people and the voters of Rotherham the opportunity not just to change the government, but to change the way we do politics forever.  More people are realising that our first past the post voting system, which could result in the Labour party coming third in the popular vote and getting the most parliamentary seats, is highly unsuitable for a modern democracy. Everybody’s vote should count and there should be no more “safe seats” for Labour or Conservative MPs.

I urge the voters of Rotherham to seize this chance for real change by voting Liberal Democrat on May 6.
