Book-buying boost is out of this world

MORE shelving may be needed at Aston Academy’s library after creative youngsters won £3,000 to spend on new books as part of World Book Day celebrations.

The school — one of several around Rotherham marking the global literacy celebration on Thursday — was named runner-run in a competition backed by best-selling author James Patterson.

Judges, including Mr Patterson, were impressed after pupils made their own DVD movie about how much they enjoy reading.

Eunice Newton, Aston Academy’s executive principal, said: “We are thrilled to win this wonderful prize and we are immensely proud of our students’ creative efforts.

“Our film showcased the children’s diverse tastes and reading choices and gave a real glimpse of what reading in our school community is all about.

“At Aston, we know that reading unlocks learning – and pupils will be so excited to choose the wonderful new books their efforts have earned them.”

As part of the competition, youngsters had to respond to the question ‘Where Does Your Reading Take You?’ and Aston pupils made their own short film in which pupils spoke about their love of reading, complete with animation, multi-lingual narration and subtitles.

Mike Kilgannon, the school’s literacy co-ordinator, said: “The students focused on the idea that World Book Day was international and they thought about all of the different languages across the world and spoke in them on the film.

“Reading is a vital skill and the cornerstone of a children’s education but beyond that it’s one of the great pleasures for them to take with them in their lives.”

Children at Catcliffe Primary School, Bramley Sunnyside Infant School, Rawmarsh Children’s Centre, Badsley Junior School, Herringthorpe Infant School and Wickersley Northfield Primary also took the chance to dress up as heroes and villains from their favourite books.
